Artist Kenny Schachter shares his artistic wisdom.
Each Wednesday I ask a different artist the same three questions.
This week’s artist is none other than Kenny Schachter. Kenny, based in New York City, masterfully wears many hats as an artist, curator, art dealer, and critic. His profound influence and innovative approach in the art scene have made him an indispensable voice, connecting contemporary art with a vibrant audience through his discerning perspectives and unique exhibitions.
1. What first sparked your interest in creating art?
My first impetus for making art, simple magazine collages applied directly to my bedroom wall as an alienated, overweight child with a speech impediment, to create my own universe and fill the time. Later in life, after the study of philosophy and unrelated grad school—only then did I discover that art was not only a vocation, but a means of self-expression and communication.
2. What are your regrets?
My one and only regret in life is substance abuse for so many decades, both drugs and alcohol; when all along, the high from waking was more than suitable to sustain me.
3. What wisdom would you offer someone beginning their art career, or exploring art for the first time at any stage in life?
Find your passion(s) in life, and then, unrelentingly, strive to make them the underpinning to your career. Do not let anyone or anything get in the way of those single-minded pursuits. Ever.
